october 2008:
- Written another web design article – this time about the apparently not so obvious fact that only IE needs DOCTYPE. This entire site is proof of that, but I have added demos to the article in case someone isn't entirely convinced.
project: fiber-optic connection…
Been working on this project for nearly a year now, but it's still some way to go before we know for sure if we'll get a fiber-optic connection for internet and other services into these hills.
Delays and lack of information, and the fact that we locals haven't been given a chance to do anything to affect progress, have created some frustration. The last few days there has been opened up for a dialogue between us locals and the company that plans and builds these connections, which makes me slightly more optimistic that the project actually can be realized if we all play our cards right.
I certainly could do with a fast connection to the outside world, so I'll do what I can to get one. We'll see over the coming weeks and months what comes out of it.
project: web design workstation…
Got the last pieces in my workstation up and running today, and it sure helps when it comes to testing web designs across browser-land. I like to know what browsers do to my creations, so repeated stress-testing / debugging is part of every design-job. That has been a time-consuming task up until now, but not anymore.
basic hardware:
- 6 screens (all lcd 17in.)
- 4 PCs (3 new Acer Aspire L5100 + 1 old Opteron)
- 1 keyboard (new)
- 1 mouse (old)
operating systems:
- win2K pro
- win XP
- Vista
- Ubuntu
The various pieces are kept seamlessly together by Synergy 1.3.1, which makes the package such a powerful workstation. Think it'll do fine for a while.
Oh, and my old iMac running OS X v.10.4.8 is standing by just in case some Mac-browser testing is needed. An old laptop PC running win XP assures some mobility, but that one is clearly showing its age. There's even a very old and slow PC running win 95 stashed away in the backup department, as I occasionally feel a bit nostalgic.
the farm: winter is closing in…
Not below freezing yet, but it's getting cold outside – +4°C around midnight as I'm writing this. I'm not particularly fond of cold and wet conditions, but what's more important; our animals don't like such conditions either.
Having a wet fur-coat when it's cold and windy is no fun, but as long as there's enough food and water and shelter near by they're doing fine. Still some grass on our pastures, and they're making the most out of it while it lasts.
One young cow and a heifer – both Jersey – have been sold to another farm. We had these animals for sale, and they needed more of the rich Jersey milk. Both parties, and the animals, are happy I think.
sincerely
