january 2008:
  • A few visitors have asked what the text in the site-wide banner is all about, so I found it was time to explain why the norwegian cow is mooooo-ing the world. The real meaning behind the message may not be quite what you thought, but what do I know

testing browsers and web standards…

Have spent some time pushing new browsers (the latest betas and finals) with new and revised parts of web standards. Uniform interpretation of standards across browser-land is definitely not at a satisfactory level, but uniformity is improving and the problems are not too hard to solve.

I found this CSS selector test quite interesting, but the success-rate were generally a bit low – with one exception.

winter time in Norway…

The new year came, and the first winter-storm came less than a week into it. Only half a meter of snow in one night, but the strong wind piled up the snow to 2-3 meters in depth in places.

The weather also caused frequent, short, power-outages as trees broke and slammed into high-voltage power-lines, and unstable power creates its own problems both indoors and outdoors on a dairy-farm.

It took a couple of days to clear snow from all roads into and on our farm, and a few more days to move all the snow far enough out of the way so it didn't hamper our farming too much … finding storage-space for large amounts of heavy snow, is always a problem.

Our cows had to stay indoors for almost 2 days while we cleared the farmroads so we could transport silage out to the feeding-stations. One or two of these indoors-periods are quite normal during a winter, and is something we are prepared for. Food and whatever else the animals need for a week, is always present in the barn.

However, our cows found life in the stable pretty boring after only a few hours, and were really happy to get out into the snow again once the roads were cleared. They acted as if the spring had arrived – running wild for a few hours, despite the fact that they had to create new paths through heavy snow to get beyond the cleared areas and out into the wood- and brush-land near the creek, where they prefer to stay in bad weather.

The snow and strong wind created some problems and tendencies to chaos on all roads in Southern Norway for a day or two, but it wasn't too bad. A bit worse for the around a thousand homes in the area that were left without power for one or more days while the power-lines through the woods were cleared and fixed. I'd be surprised if we don't get worse weather with more problems before the winter is over.

Temperatures have since been hovering around freezing in our area, with a bit of thawing and water flowing all over our roads one day, and the same water frozen solid, creating pretty slippery roads for cattle and vehicles, the next. One day it rains some and the next it snows some – I'm not exactly fond of these winters.

a playground:

This site-section is a playground for future site development, and by definition a bit unstable.

For now I'll use it to list the latest site updates, and also for small notes about anything that I'd like to share with others without having to write full articles.

It may end up as a blog without comments, or it may end up as a blog with comments. It may also just end.
