february 2008:
- I don't like the announced IE8 version targeting one bit – mostly because it defaults backwards, to IE7.
internet connection…
Our internet connection is slow and not extremely reliable, and up until now there hasn't been much we could do about it. This is about to change in the not too distant future.
It's now confirmed that we will benefit from a state-backed “minimum access speed guarantee” for internet connections in most of Norway, which for our part should at least bring it up to around 1Mb before the end of 2008. Not much by any standard today, but many, many, times faster than what we have now.
Alongside that state-backed guarantee, a group of people in our area have spent much time and effort the last couple of months trying to initiate the construction and spreading of a much more up to date fiber-optic system. It now looks like we may have succeded in gathering enough pre-subscribers to make such a system commercially viable for the relevant players on the internet/phone/cable-tv market in our area.
If the fiber-optic system becomes reality – something we still won't know for sure for at least a couple of months, we'll get access to a 50/25Mb internet connection + phone + tv channels – with plenty to grow on for years to come. The construction of such a system will then receive some funding from the state-backed guarantee it will come instead of, and provide us with a very good communication-channel to the rest of the world at a (for us) relatively low cost. I sure will welcome that!
priorities…
The real world on the farm gets most of my attention these days, which literally means I don't even have time to write about it. So for now that's all I'll write on the matter.
